        I chose a different path from the Corporate world in 1986. I had an infant and wanted to take a short break from my lucrative but time intensive position in broadcast sales at ABC in Washington DC.   I decided to try a year as an Educational Consultant with Discovery Toys because they offer the most outstanding developmental products for families and our 3 month old daughter, Kelly, could be my "toy tester" along with about a dozen nieces and nephews I needed to buy birthday and Christmas gifts for. If nothing else, Discovery Toys would allow me to save lots of money buying all their gifts at wholesale!  

        I never would have believed that I would still be "playing for a living" 37 years later!   We now have 3 children.   Kelly graduated from college and was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic for 3 years and came back to UVA getting a Masters in Leadership and Public Policy on scholarship. She then worked for Deloitte in Federal and International Consulting for 5 years spending the last 2 years in Amman, Jordan.   Kelly completed her MBA at UVA that Deloitte paid for and she is now working in Denver as a consultant for the Gates Foundation.   Robbie graduated Magna Cum Laude from Radford University in Marketing and is in computer software sales for Data Dog, and works virtually in Arlington, VA.. Robbie earned Presidents Club the last 3 years and won trips to Aruba and Maui. We are very excited that he is marrying Shaina Lippman and living in Fairfax, 15 minutes from us. Kevin graduated from James Madison University with a BS in Management. He also received the Nicky Laman scholarship awarded to children of Discovery Toy consultants!   Kevin worked for NY Life and decided to be adventurous and taught English as a Second Language in S. Korea for 2 years and even got to go to the Winter Olympics. After returning, Kevin hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and then joined his sister in Denver. They all grew up so quickly and I am so happy that my fun, flexible, part time job allowed me to be there for most of their sports activities, chaperoneing field trips and being the room mother.   They all grew up playing with Discovery Toys (of course that's why they're so smart !) and watched mom set goals to grow her business while they were growing up.      

        My husband, Mike, has enjoyed the extra income my career has provided for the family and the 23 all-expense paid incentive trips for two I have earned from Discovery Toys to Hawaii, Paris, London, Acaplulco, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Rico, Punta Cana, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Disneyland, the Bahamas, Caribbean Cruises,   etc. Now that Mike has retired he sometimes comes and help me at large holiday fairs and educational conferences.
 
        Overall, Discovery Toys has been a wonderful "family business" because our products encourage a child's positive growth and development.   Our children loved playing with Discovery Toys because they are fun - but they also learned at the same time.   For me, Discovery Toys has provided a meaningful business opportunity that has increased as my family has grown by allowing me to build my work schedule around my family life while earning significant income to support our lifestyle.
