Discovery Toys gives me a chance to make a difference. As a former preschool and elementary educator, I have a passion for teaching and learning. It seems no matter where life takes me, I find my way back to education. When I was a little girl, while other children talked about "playing house," I "played school." I believe in the power of play.

Can you imagine a young adult of 18 years who has never sat outside on grass? About a year ago while attending a yoga class, I met a young lady who was leary of doing so. It is my guess that free play had never been prioritized in her life. This real life scenario is what many children are facing in today's crisis in play. Here's what we can do.

Encouraging creativity, movement and social interaction.
Minimizing screen time and avoiding it for children younger than two years.
Setting appointments to play.
Talking with your children.
Reading to your children and having them read to you. (Even very young children read pictures. Try it!)
Much like an electrician, a nurse or a writer uses tools, toys are the tools of children's trade that they use "to gain mastery of themselves and their environment."
